Report Says ETF Industry May See Large-Scale SEC Review

According to a Financial Times report, the SEC is laying the groundwork to examine the exchange-traded funds industry and the consequences of its rapid growth. The expected areas of review range from issues such as the implications of ETFs’ increasing share of the US stock market, to structural concerns around ETFs tracking bonds. A working group of at least a dozen people from across the SEC’s divisions was formed about a year ago to examine ETF products, the report said. In a speech earlier this year, the SEC chairwoman Mary Jo White hinted the regulator was considering a wider examination of ETFs.
