Web Event Archive: Modernizing Board Oversight of Mutual Funds and Emerging Challenges from Other Pooled Investment Vehicles and Robo-Advisers

Over the past few years, the SEC has taken numerous steps to modernize board oversight of mutual funds and focus fund directors on critical issues for investor protection. At the same time, the financial services industry has been expanding the use of other forms of collective investment vehicles, like separately managed accounts and collective investment trusts, that compete with registered investment companies but are not subject to similar systems of fiduciary protections. In addition, robo-advisers increasingly offer portfolio management tools that are functionally similar to mutual funds. Taken together, this evolving landscape creates new challenges for mutual fund boards and also for the SEC.  This program will explore these issues and discuss what, if any, the SEC and the fund industry can do to remain competitive.
