Cohen & Co. Discusses Registered Funds and Investments in Digital Assets

“Decentralized finance will provide a very good test for our ability to regulate with an eye toward protecting the interests of investors and markets, not incumbents,”  SEC Commissioner Hester Peirce said in a recent speech. Peirce, who has long backed innovation in digital assets, said a successful regulatory regime would attract a wider array of participants in the markets and drive creativity. While Peirce has long voiced her support for the digital asset industry the SEC has sought to properly balance encouraging innovation while protecting investors. In a recent program, Cohen & Company presenters discussed how registered funds may invest in digital assets. Rob Velotta and Corey McLaughlin  touched on a number of topics including an overview of digital assets and how registered funds may invest, operational and accounting issues to be aware of when investing in digital assets, as well as the tax and RIC qualification considerations.
