Highlights of SEC Speaks 2024

After a one-year hiatus, the SEC recently held its annual SEC Speaks conference on April 3 and 4 in Washington DC. Panels addressed SEC priorities, initiatives and enforcement focus areas as well as litigation and legislative updates and featured commentary from Chair Gary Gensler, Division of Enforcement Director Gurbir Grewal as well as SEC Commissioners Hester Peirce and Mark Uyeda, among many others. Among the highlights of the sessions, Chair Gensler offered a historical overview of securities laws and discussed the importance of clearinghouses and best execution duties.  Commissioner Peirce offered several suggestions to increase public engagement with the SEC, and Commissioner Uyeda reviewed weaknesses in the SEC’s recent climate rule. Division of Investment Management staff addressed several regulatory issues affecting investment advisers, including T+1, the Marketing Rule, and Form N-PX reporting. The Division of Examinations staff focused on the need for advisers to implement supervisory controls around the use of AI, as well as governance and appropriate disclosure. The Division of Enforcement focused on crypto assets violations as well as off-channel communications and marketing rule violations.
