Last week, independent fund directors, CCOs, and a variety of other industry professionals convened in Washington, DC for MFDF’s annual Fund Governance and Regulatory Insights conference. The conference offered attendees the ability to network with their peers and take a deeper dive into many of the pertinent issues fund boards face in the coming years.
On Thursday, SEC Division of Investment Management Director Brian Daly joined Carolyn McPhillips for a fireside chat. Director Daly discussed his thoughts on retail access to private funds, his philosophy on regulation, and a few of his priorities for the years to come. On Friday, a panel of DC experts analyzed the year ahead in Washington including what to expect from Congress and the SEC on particular issues related to the fund industry such retail access to alternatives, proxy voting, and artificial intelligence.
Governance-focused program highlights include how fund boards can work through challenging discussions, build trust, and better engage a third-party recruitment firm. In one breakout session, attendees discussed board self-assessment practices through engagement with peers and highly experienced breakout session leaders. A separate breakout session covered board responsibilities and awareness around product development and new product launches.
Additional general session panels covered ETFs, active management, board oversight of alternative assets, and an EY tabletop exercise focused on cyber risk and resilience. Friday’s breakout sessions covered tender offer and interval fund oversight, recent developments in tokenization, and board oversight of subadvisors.
Next year’s conference will be held April 8-9, 2027 in Washington DC. Registration is expected to go live in the fall of 2026, don’t miss out on this exceptional program.
