MFDF’s Composition Survey Report Offers a Unique Look at Fund Independent Directors’ Qualifications
MFDF is very pleased to publish the report presenting the findings from its late-2025 survey on fund boards’ composition. The report shows a point-in-time look at the independent directors that make up the fund board industry, and illuminates points of commonality between boards (all responding boards have at least one independent director who joined the board with existing experience serving on another type of board) as well as areas of variability among boards, such as with regard to board members serving on multiple fund boards.
Included in the report are points of interest including:
- common and uncommon experiences and qualifications among current independent directors,
- interpretations on defining common terms like fund industry experience and Qualified Audit Committee Financial Expert,
- comparisons of board size by assets overseen and size of fund complex, and
- findings related to board practices around board education and board leadership.
MFDF will host a couple of opportunities for further engagement with these findings. On April 22, Leslie Beckbridge will present some key findings and insights in a 30-minute spotlight program. Later this year, we will host a discussion based In Focus virtual program for independent directors and CCOs to delve into the report and explore how directors/boards may use this and other reports to inform their governance practices.
